#34 John Horn lines up his shot

The Hampton Roads Whalers Pee Wee AA team began their CBHL season play on the road this weekend with an aggressive start and much to look forward to.

Saturday's matchup against the Reston Raiders proved to be a good test for the young Whalers. Reston's Olympic sized rink gave the Whalers a lot of room to move, generated tons of open ice and provided many "fast breaks" for both teams.
After Reston opened up the scoring midway through the first, Regen Cavanagh (assisted by Nick Jones and Kaleb Willis) found the back of the net at the 11:45 mark of the 2nd period on a power play to tie the game at 1. Less than 2 minutes later Jones netted a goal (assisted by Ashton Rogers) to give the Whalers the lead for the rest of the game. John Horn blasted a slap shot by the Reston goalie only 1 minute later to give the Whalers a 3-1 lead going into the 3rd.
In the 3rd, Kaleb Willis lit the lamp only 6 seconds into the period (assisted by Cavanagh) to put the Whalers up 4-1. Reston managed a power play goal at the 13:14 mark of the 3rd, but the Whalers closed the door and solidified their 5-2 win with 7:57 remaining when Ashton Rogers scored (assisted by Trevor Neubauer and Jordan Byrne).
Zach Alvarado faced 16 shots, giving up only 2 goals.

On Sunday, the Whalers traveled to Bowie, MD to take on the Bruins at Bowie Ice Arena. This one-sided matchup proved to be the Whalers best game of the weekend as they dominated both ends of the ice and tripled the Bruins on shots.
Kaleb Willis opened the scoring at the 4:09 mark of the 1st period with an unassisted goal. Early in the 2nd period during a power play, Ashton Rogers netted his second goal of the weekend (also unassisted). John Horn lit the lamp at the 4:08 mark (again unassisted) to put the Whalers up 3-0. Kaleb Willis scored his second goal of the game with 34 seconds remaining in the 2nd (assisted by Regen Cavanagh and Nick Jones). Bowie managed their lone goal of the game with 3 seconds remaining in the 2nd, but the Whalers took a commanding 4-1 lead going into the 3rd period.
In a twisted turn of events, the Whalers managed 2 short-handed goals at the 8:44 and 7:30 marks of the 3rd. Both goals were scored by Regen Cavanagh and assisted by Kaleb Willis. With the wind all but gone from the Bruins sails, Daniel Gross (unassisted) lit the lamp with 5:20 remaining, and then Trevor Neubauer slapped home a great rebound (assisted by Rogers and Willis) to finalize the Whalers 8-1 win.
Zach Alvarado took home the win facing only 9 shots.

The Whalers final game of the weekend pitted them against the very under-rated Tri-city Eagles at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD. The back and forth game proved to be a bit faster than the 2 previous games, and the Whalers struggled to put the puck in the net.
Regen Cavanagh found the back of the net at the 14:08 mark of the 1st period (assisted by Phil Heisse), and then Tri-City scored to tie the game only a few minutes later. This would be the end of the scoring for the game as the Whalers came away with a 1-1 tie. The Whalers more than tripled the Tri-city shots on net, 35-11, but couldn't cap the win.

With a respectable 2-0-1 record to start the season, the Whalers travel to Rockville, MD this weekend to take on the Montgomery Blue Devils Pee Wee AA team. The puck drops on Saturday at 6:20 pm, with a follow-up game on Sunday morning at 9:05 am.

SIDE NOTE: The Whalers would like to wish Tri-City player #14, Keith Murphy, a speedy recovery and we hope to see you back on the ice real soon!!
