Salvation Army Helps Westland, MI Youth Skate in Red Wings' Youth Hockey Camp
August 20, 2009 by Youth 1The Westland Observer posted an author-less story about a happy recipient of a charitable donation by the Salvation Army--an 11-year-old who comes from a family that doesn't have enough money to get him involved in hockey, but still received a chance to skate on Joe Louis Arena's ice last month:
August 20, Westland Observer: For a child with dreams of being a professional ice hockey player, a recent day at Joe Louis Arena was exceptionally inspiring. Thanks to the Detroit Red Wings, Warrior Hockey and The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit, Jagr Bugaski, 11, experienced every hockey fan's dream last month - ice time at Joe Louis Arena and coaching from former player Jiri Fischer (now director of player development) and current player Darren McCarty.
"He's doing good,'' said McCarty, who watched Jagr skate on the ice from the players' bench. "He's got the spunk. He's got the determination. That's what it's all about,"
The Red Wings and sponsor Warrior Hockey donated a scholarship for the Westland youth to attend the organization's 2009 Youth Hockey Camp, July 13-14.
"The camp can be expensive, and we saw it as a great opportunity for someone like Jagr to experience the Joe," said Red Wings Youth Hockey Manager Phil Pierce. "He's trying hard. If you have a passion for hockey, once you get out there, you're just going to get better and better."
In addition, Warrior Hockey of Warren donated Jagr's equipment, excluding skates and a helmet.
"We got him outfitted in complete Warrior gear," said Jason Reynolds, the company's regional brand representative. "When we gave it all to him, you could tell he was trying to contain his excitement."
