Reston Raiders Defeat Frederick Fury in Non-League Game

For the Bantam AA Reston Raiders, a visit from the Frederick Fury for a non-league exhibition game could not have come at a better time. After their uneven performance at the Steel City Tournament in Pittsburgh last weekend, it would not have been at all surprising for a few self-doubts to creep into the team’s collective psyche,

But Saturday morning’s 6-0 win accomplished several things at once. For starters, it erased the bitter taste of a 1-3 tournament performance; it instilled in the team a renewed sense of self-confidence and – perhaps most important of all – it got the team back on the right track.

Despite the final score, it was not an easy victory. Fury goaltender Kyle Olmstead was outstanding, turning aside wave after wave of Reston scoring bids to keep the Fury within striking distance of Reston’s 1-0 lead through two periods. Fortunately, Raiders goaltender Drew Teitelbaum was equally brilliant, producing dazzling saves on numerically fewer, but no less challenging Frederick scoring opportunities. After stopping a flurry of shots midway through the first period, Drew single-handedly preserved the Raiders’ lead with a lightning quick glove save on a blazing slapshot with 13 seconds remaining and Reston still nursing that 1-0 lead, and then again at the buzzer to end the second period when he stopped another serious Fury scoring bid.

Then finally, in the third period, the floodgates opened.

Scott Henning, who provided Reston’s early lead on a slapshot from the point in the game’s second minute, netted his second goal on a nearly identical play, taking a pass from Max Harrison and clanking a rising 50-footer off the far post past Olmstead. From there, the Raiders dominance started translating into goals. With 7:12 to play, Corey Baumgartner – twice denied earlier by Olmstead – found room above the goalie’s shoulder to convert the rebound of a Danny Weiss shot and less than a minute later, Reston increased their lead to 4-0 when Andrew White fed Michael Horn for a goal mouth score. Reston added the exclamation point on goals from Andrew, off a feed from Maury Winter and Brandon Vasofsky’s conversion of a Zack Haubach rebound.

The shutout was Drew’s second of the season, his first having come on September 14 in the team’s second game against the Pittsburgh Vipers. But unlike his previous goose egg, in which he faced minimal scoring threats, Frederick tested him 24 times. On each occasion however, Drew came up big, exuding greater confidence which soon became an aura of invincibility as the game wore on. By the middle of the third period, it became obvious to all that nothing was about to enter his net on this day.

“Clearly, his very best game of the season thus far,” said Coach Simon Roberts afterwards.

Non-league play continues this weekend when the Raiders host the Mercer Chiefs in the second leg of the teams’ four-game “friendly” series. The opener takes place Saturday night at 8:10 p.m. with the second game set for Sunday morning at 7:10, both at SkateQuest. CBHL play resumes Saturday, November 15 with the long-awaited matchup with Ashburn, 4:20 p.m. at SkateQuest.
