Whalers Sweep CBHL Weekend

The Whalers Squirt Team traveled to Rockville,MD. on Saturday Oct 25 to take on the Montgomery Blue Devils in a league game. The Whalers put pressure on the Blue Devils right from the start.

They dominated the 1st period by outshooting the Blue Devils 16-3. But the Whalers could not capitalize on their chances and found themselves tied 0-0 at the end of the 1st period.

In the 2nd period Cody Wilson wasted no time by scoring a minute and 15 seconds into the period. 67 seconds later Nolan Cavanagh wins a battle in front of the net to give the Whalers a 2-0 lead. The Whalers would score once more in the period when Nolan Cavanagh fed Brandon Osmundson a one timer to put the Whalers up 3-0. The Blue Devils answered back with a goal late in the 2nd to end the period 3-1 Whalers. The Whalers outshot the Blue Devils 15-10.

The 3rd period proved to be a test of strength and penalty kills for the Whalers. The Blue Devils scored a minute and 45 seconds into the period to cut the lead to 1. The Whalers would then have to kill off four straight Blue Devil powerplays. Shorthanded and deep in the Blue Devil zone, Brandon Osmundson wins a faceoff to feed Cody Wilson on a one timer from the top of the circle to put the Whalers up 4-2 at the 5:40 mark. The Blue Devils answered back to keep the Whalers at a 1goal lead. With 3 minutes to go in the game Brandon Osmundson found himself one on one with the Blue Devil goalie and scored on a double deek move to put the Whalers up 5-3. The Blue Devils would score on a powerplay goal with 1:25 left in the game to bring the Whaler lead back to 1. With the goalie pulled and a 6 on 5 advantage for the Blue Devils, Brandon Osmundson put the game away with a empty net goal to give the Whalers a 6-4 victory. The Whalers were outshot in the 3rd 14-9. For the game the Whalers outshot the Blue Devils 40-27.

On Sunday Oct 26 the Whalers were in Reston, VA. taking on the Reston Raiders for their 2nd league game of the weekend. The Raiders would score 1st four minutes into the 1st period. Late in the 1st period the Whalers found themselves on a 2 on 1 breakaway with Cody Wilson tieing the game 1-1 on a pass from Brandon Osmundson at the 2:50 mark. The period would end tied 1-1. The Whalers outshot the Raiders 5-4.

The Raiders came out strong in the 2nd period by scoring the 1st goal. The rest of the period would belong to the Whalers. Just 16 seconds after the Raiders scored, Brandon Osmundson scored to tie the game at 2-2.(assisted by Brenden McQueeney) Then 56 seconds later Nolan Cavanagh scored on a tip pass from Brenden McQueeney to give the Whalers a 3-2 lead. The Whalers got a shorthanded goal from Brenden McQueeney (assisted by Nolan Cavanagh) at the 3:25 mark to give the Whalers a 2 goal lead. With a minute to go in the period Brandon Osmundson scored on a wrist shot to give the Whalers a 5-2 lead going into the 3rd period. The Whalers outshot the Raiders 10-8.

The 3rd period found the Whalers in penalty trouble again. The Whalers played half the period shorthanded killing off 3 out of 4 powerplays. The Raiders got the only goal of the period with 1 minute left in the game on a powerplay to get within 2 goals. The Whalers would come out with a 5-3 victory. The Whalers were outshot in the period 7-6. For the game the Whalers outshot the Raiders 21-19.

Britt League and Gage Davenport combined allowed only 7 goals on 46 shots for the weekend. Great job by the two Whaler Goalies!

The Whalers are 4-0-1 and on top in the CBHL standings. The Whalers will be at home for the next 3 weekends. Next up, the Reston Raiders at Chilled Ponds Nov 1 at 2pm and Nov 2 at 7:30am for a league game.
